What We Do
Wezesha Biashara Network (WBN) strengthens Kenya’s Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) by addressing the systemic barriers that limit their growth, competitiveness, and sustainability. Through research-driven advocacy, strategic partnerships, and targeted capacity-building, we empower MSEs to scale, access opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to national development.
WBN delivers impact through eight core pillars:
Advocacy and Policy:
This pillar focuses on analyzing and addressing the challenging policy and regulatory environment faced by MSEs. It includes activities such as advocating for policy reforms supported by research, providing technical resources to help MSEs navigate legal compliance, advocacy for a friendly tax policy, participation in the National & county budget process
Skills development:
under this pillar MSEs are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed. It includes providing training, technical assistance and mentorship on a broad range of areas such as business management, financial literacy, marketing, technology adoption, board governance and business ethics among others.
Access to Finance:
This pillar addresses the challenges MSEs face in accessing affordable credit, financial services . It includes; creating awareness of opportunities available to MSEs such as government funds exploring partnerships with financial institutions and developing innovative financial products tailored to the needs of MSEs. Further Advocating for policies & product that increase access to credit e.g. Credit Guarantee Schemes.
Technology and Innovation:
This pillar focuses on supporting MSEs in adopting new technologies to improve efficiency, competitiveness, and access to markets. It includes providing training on digital literacy, facilitating access to technology infrastructure, and promoting the use of e-commerce and digital payment platforms.
Sustainability:
This pillar promotes sustainable practices among MSEs to address environmental challenges and meet the growing demand for eco-friendly products and services by providing training on sustainable business practices.
Women and Youth Employability, and Entrepreneurship:
This thematic area aims to empower women and youth entrepreneurs by providing them with tailored support and resources. It includes activities such as providing training on entrepreneurship, business management, and financial literacy, and facilitating access to finance and markets.
Anti-Corruption & Ethics:
Corruption epitomizes weakness in our ethical standards and integrity. To the economy, it undermines development and public service delivery by diverting development resources to the personal gain of a few individuals; To businesses, corruption increases the cost of doing business; creates an unfair playing ground and curtails efforts towards efficiency improvement innovations that could further promote profitability of businesses, employment & wealth creation. Research has demonstrated that MSEs are disproportionally more negatively impacted by corruption. Improving integrity, limiting opportunities for corruption and strengthening compliance is critical for sector growth. Interventions in this area include; Business Ethics training and technical assistance, public private dialogue through the Africa Business Ethics Conference and culture change through Wezesha Integrity Award
Association Governance & Development :
Corporate governance of Associations is crucial as it ensures accountability, effectiveness, sustainability and enhances the organization's ability to advocate effectively on behalf of its members. WBN strengthens Business Associations by enhancing their corporate governance, ensuring effective management of resources which ultimately results in sustainable organizations. This is achieved through; organization diagnostics & assessment, training of the board and senior leadership teams in: Board Governance, Strategic planning, development of membership services and sustainability planning.
